Dear Mr. William Clay Ford, Sr.

I understand you to be a good and honorable man, a Yale graduate, a caring and honest family man, and a person who cares deeply for the city of Detroit. You are a good man with a good vision and my deepest thanks for bringing Ford Field, the home of the Lions to the heart of Detroit. Your honest and fair business dealings and the respect you show everyone that you work with is legendary. You are a class act.

The purpose of this letter is a humble attempt to persuade you of the merits of firing Millen or selling the Lions (meaning that if you cannot hold Millen accountable and make the change, then I think it is time to let someone else make those changes). Now the Lions belong to you and you have every right to keep them under your control for as long as you like. The question however is why. Despite your best intentions, the Lions have not and are not performing at a respectable level. Under your ownership the Lions are now, arguably, the worst team in the NFL. You, sir, deserve better for your legacy and better for the Ford Motor Company affiliations.

With no mark against your character, the Lions under your ownership have not developed into a competitive team. They continue to decline and suffer, with no reasonable expectation for improvement. I am not blaming you, but sometimes when things are not working, we simply need to try something different. I think you have made valiant attempts at helping the Lions become a better team; unfortunately it is simply not working. In the competitive world of sports only one statistic really matters and the Lions' bottom line is showing nothing but losses. Too many losses over the years to not want to see something change.

Dear Mr. William Clay Ford Sr., I humbly implore you to consider selling the franchise, even if for no other reason than to try something different. For the sake of the team, the NFL, the city of Detroit, the Ford Motor Company and the fans.

Now it would be an unfair proposition for me to recommend that you act while I sit and do nothing. I therefore make this pledge to you. I have not purchased a Ford product in over twenty years. On the day you announce that the Lions are available for purchase or have been sold, I will purchase a Ford automobile. Perhaps others will make similar offers...

Sincerely,
Michael Kumm
